DATABASE OBSERVABILITY

PostgreSQL Monitoring for Small Engineering Teams

Investigate PostgreSQL performance using selected database measurements and the application evidence your team exports. Spekra brings that context into one organization workspace; engineers remain responsible for diagnosing causes and approving changes.

Guided pilot scope · Reviewed 2026-10-16. No production AI diagnosis, automatic infrastructure/DDL remediation or compliance certification is offered.

What can you monitor?

The PostgreSQL collector reads pg_stat_activity for sessions, active query observations and wait events; pg_stat_database supplies transaction and cache counters. Ungranted locks and instance-wide connection capacity provide additional operational context.

Host CPU, memory and disk observations come from a separately deployed host collector. An observation from a collector host does not by itself prove that the database runs on that host.

How collection works

An administrator can register a database reachable from the Spekra server, or configure a Node.js agent near the database. Server-side polling normally runs every five seconds and uses a small connection pool. Registering a target saves configuration; connection status and actual readings must still be checked.

Polling is sampled. It can miss short queries, and a running query's observed age is not its final completed duration. The field labelled QPS currently uses PostgreSQL transaction-counter deltas, so it should not be described as exact statements per second.

A practical investigation

Start with one slow staging request. Inspect its exported trace, then review relevant query observations, connection usage, locks and host timestamps. The investigation workspace distinguishes identifier links from same-service or same-time context.

Concurrent symptoms do not prove causation. Spekra's supported production rules flag conditions for review; they do not generate a verified query plan or apply an index automatically.

Data handling and connection requirements

The database collector normalizes common SQL literals before storing query shapes. This is a limited regex-based path, not a universal personal-data removal guarantee. Logs and OpenTelemetry attributes require their own upstream redaction.

Use a dedicated monitoring account and verify its permissions. The current polling collectors do not fully wire through database-link TLS configuration; discuss any mandatory encrypted database connection before agreeing on a pilot. Public console HTTPS does not secure a separate database connection.

Frequently asked questions

Does Spekra change PostgreSQL tables or indexes?

Supported production monitoring and schema capture read operational views and catalog metadata. Automatic index creation, session termination and DDL remediation are unavailable.

Will monitoring have zero overhead?

No zero-overhead guarantee is made. Collection uses database connections and queries. Measure its impact with a representative staging workload and an agreed collection interval.

What should a first PostgreSQL pilot include?

One staging application and database, a permitted monitoring account, one instrumented request and an agreed investigation task. Validate connectivity, source identity, redaction and useful observations before expanding.
